  • Good Evening, Chairman and Commissioners, I represent Citizens for Old Natchez Trace and we resolve this New Year to continue our efforts to protect and preserve the recently recognized Natchez Trace Historic rural landscape as one of the Top Ten most endangered historic properties in Tennessee.   We also want to remember fondly our former Commissioner Ernie Williams who died suddenly last month.  Many of us will never forget his heartfelt eloquent plea to the county highway commission on behalf of the Old Natchez Trace.  He and his wife, Nancy, truly loved the Old Natchez and were strong advocates for…

The Tennessee Preservation Trust cordially invites you and your representatives to their annual Ten in Tennessee event on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at 6pm at the Historic Franklin Masonic Hall in Franklin, Tennessee. Placed on the 2015 Ten in Tennessee, the Historic Franklin Masonic Hall (c 1823-1826) received noted attention and advocacy that is moving the beginning phase of the…

  • Good Evening Chairman and Commissioners,   I am before you, yet again, to advocate for the removal of the proposed turn lane onto the Old Natchez Trace from Sneed Road.  The county highway commission recently approved widenings on Sneed which are being required due to the Rochford super-sized Stephens Valley subdivision.  The turn lane onto the Old Natchez Trace is part of the road improvements package to deal with the storm surge of traffic Stephens Valley will be creating. I can only hope that there is truth to the saying, “the squeaky wheel gets the grease.”  This proposed turn lane…

  • This historic Natchez Trace/Harpeth River Valley landscape was named as a Last Chance Landscape in 2001 by the national conservation group, Scenic America.   We are still working to protect and preserve this scenic landscape. Please join us.

  • Good Evening Chairman and Commissioners, I am here representing Citizens for Old Natchez Trace.  We will continue to appeal to our county officials to stop the planned turn lane from Sneed Road onto one of the most historic roads in the United States.   The recently approved super-sized subdivision, Stephens Valley, will be generating overwhelming traffic, making travelling the scenic, historic roads in our community a bumper to bumper….or simply said….bummer experience. Citizens has recently posted old fashioned Burma Shave signs at the Sneed end of the ONT.  One way the signs read:  ROCHFORD’S TURN LANE / NOT THE RIGHT…

  • Citizens for Old Natchez Trace is pleased to announce the newest signage we have erected in our efforts to protect and preserve the Old Natchez Trace.  These green and white “Burma Shave” signs send a message to travelers along the ONT.  Traveling toward Sneed Road the signs read: “Rochford Profits / At Any Cost / Taxpayers Pay / Historic Land Lost / Citizens for Old Natchez Trace.org”  Turning onto the ONT from Sneed Road the signs read:  Rochford’s Turn Lane / Not the Right Place / Adding Traffic To / Old Natchez Trace / Citizens for Old Natchez Trace.org Citizens…

  • Good Morning Chairman and Commissioners, I know you have a long day ahead, so I will be brief.  I am hoping that the new tax rate you will be approving will be closer to 2.0 rather than 2.15.  I am sure other taxpayers would agree with me.  Williamson County has a growth issue…..uncontrolled growth is the code of a cancer cell.  Overdevelopment has been the death knell to many cities and counties who do not realize that less is more and bigger is not always better. Residential growth does not pay for itself.  We, the taxpayers, pay for it.  Developers…

  • Williamson County Commission meets Monday, July 11th at 9:00AM in the County Auditorium at 1320 West Main Street, Franklin 37064 to pass the Williamson County budget. We all received white and green postcards which told us our property values had increased.  This is good news!  However, unless the current tax rate of 2.31 is reduced to 1.8115 we will be paying MORE property taxes out of our own pockets. One of the first resolutions on this agenda is to raise the 1.8115 tax rate to 2.15 which means that we all will be paying more taxes to build more schools,…

  • The Williamson County Highway Commission meeting this morning was very informative regarding the county's potential plans for handling the ever increasing traffic on several county roads, one of which is Sneed Road.  The daily vehicle count is almost 14,000 cars.  This will be exacerbated by the mega density created by the Stephens Valley development at the end of Sneed Road. On behalf of the Citizens for Old Natchez Trace, I requested, yet again that the proposed turn lanes onto the ONT be denied.  These turn lanes will cause a serious breach in the remaining integrity of the ONT. One would…

  • Fox News joined us Sunday for our Rally for the Valley and did a wonderful story on a beautiful day. http://fox17.com/news/local/fight-to-save-stephens-valley-continues

  • Our Rally for the Valley on the Currey's River Circle Farm was a wonderful success!  It was a beautiful day and neighbors came from all around our scenic, historic community to learn more about what they can do to help us Save Stephens Valley, Save the Old Natchez Trace and Save the viewshed of the Natchez Trace Parkway from the intensity of the the mega density Rochford is planning.  A petition calling for changes in the Williamson County planning process gained more signatures and as did support for protecting and preserving the rich inventory of historic resources in this treasured…

  • Come one and all to the community Rally for the Valley this Sunday, May 22 from 2-4 PM at the River Circle Farm on Sneed Road at Vaughn Road.  Help us save Stephens Valley, the Old Natchez Trace and the Natchez Trace Parkway from mega density development destruction.

  • August 27, 2014   Dear Ten in Tennessee Committee,   As Williamson County mayor, I am writing to add my support to the nomination of the Old Natchez Trace to the Ten in Tennessee most endangered list of historic places.  Specifically, I am nominating the 4.2 mile part of the original Natchez Trace which has been an operational county road since its inception in 1801.    This piece of the Old Natchez Trace is one the most valuable historic, scenic and culturally significant resources in our county.    As head of the Williamson County Highway Commission, I and the highway…

  • The 4.2 mile part of the original Old Natchez Trace from Old Hillsboro Road to Sneed Road in western Williamson County is one of the oldest operational roads in the United States.  In 1801, U.S Army soldiers paved the original footpath of Native Americans and settlers to facilitate better postal delivery.   ***The Williamson County Highway Department is going to be widening and paving this historic, scenic and culturally significant road. They are already removing the trees whose roots help to support the roadbed and act as God’s guardrail along the Harpeth River.   ***Concerned residents along the Trace want…
